Course Content and Standards: The primary goal in ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Course) is to prepare students for college and the “real world.” Critical thinking and writing skills will be improved through the reading and discussion of literature and non-fiction. The course stresses verbal communication skills. Emphasis is given to writing paragraphs of different styles, with essay revision in order to improve language expression and encourage the ability to think critically. Types of essays will be reflective, argumentative, and expository.
Rules and Expectations: Students are expected to know and adhere to all school and district policies and behavior standards outlined in the Leland Student and Parent Handbook. While in class, keep your area free of trash, do not leave your seat without permission, and be courteous and attentive during instruction, discussions, and group activities.
Testing: Each unit will have multiple short written responses and tests, culminating in a final project/presentation and/or written essay.
Homework: Reading and writing assignments will be assigned throughout the weeks. Written homework must be typed. It is strongly suggested that students take notes for every reading assignment. Assignments will be posted at: mrajlouny.weebly.com
Absence/Make-up Work: Students can turn in late work for late credit.
Participation: All students must engage in class discussions and respond accordingly when called upon. No cell phone use in class unless given permission by the teacher.
Written Work Format: Typed essays must be in MLA format. 12 point font, double spaced, with one inch margins.
Assignment/Grading System: An A grade is 90-100%, a B grade is 80-89%, a C grade is 70-79%, and a D grade is 60-69%.
